Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Soft Biomaterials and Interface Science (ref 234468)

University of Oslo

The project aims at determining unique features of surface-adhered model protocell populations in the context of the origin of life. Specific focus will be on mapping the combinations of lipid species and surfaces which lead to non-trivial biomembrane topologies, how surfaces promote formation of model protocell networks and colonies, and encapsulation of prebiotic chemicals, if/how protocells communicate within the surface-adhered populations. Major parts of the project contain design, fabrication and characterization of surfaces, fabrication of liposomes and 2D lipid films, micromanipulation of surface-adhered model protocells using glass capillaries or microfluidic chips and the observation of the responses mainly by optical, surface, and scanning electron microscopy.
