Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a 3-years postdoctoral research fellow position at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology (www.sars.no/ ) in the research group of Dr. Patrick Steinmetz. The position is funded by Sars core funding and an NFR FRIPRO grant. The Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen, and is a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) www.embl.de/ . The place of work will be at the Sars Centre. The preferred starting time is February 2023.

About the project/work tasks:

The research group ‘Evolution of nutrient and growth homeostasis in animals’ is interested in understanding how animal growth is regulated by feeding using the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis as research organism. A major focus of the lab is to understand how the proliferation of stem and progenitor cell populations is regulated by food availability. We have recently found that a considerable proportion of cells (>5%) exit and re-enter the cell cycle upon starvation and re-feeding, respectively. The successful candidate will analyse data from high-throughput sequencing experiments (bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq and ATAC-Seq) to characterise changes in the transcriptome and chromatin accessibility during the transition between quiescence and cell cycle re-entry. The candidate will be responsible for implementing the analysis pipeline, including quality control of raw reads, mapping, statistical analysis and data visualization. It is possible, but not required, that the candidate contributes to the generation of high-throughput sequencing datasets (e.g. library preparation for bulk RNA-Seq, single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-Seq). Biological interpretation will be performed in close collaboration with other researchers in the group.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in a discipline relevant to the project or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
  • The successful candidate must have a good working knowledge of high-throughput sequencing data analysis methods
  • Experience of programming in a language relevant for Bioinformatics is essential (e.g. R, Python)
  • Experience in working with datasets from ‘non-model animals’ (e.g. cnidarians, sponges, sea urchins, amphioxus, tunicates,…) is beneficial but not required
  • A strong motivation to perform research at an internationally competitive level is expected
  • The ability to work both independently and to cooperate with others in a structured manner is essential
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement
  • The application cover letter, in English, must explain the candidate’s interest in this workgroup and how the candidate’s skillset matches the position
