Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within sedimentary geology
At the Department of Earth Science there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within sedimentary geology. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years. The position is financed by the University of Bergen (UiB) and is attached to the project “Source-to-sink of the upper Mesozoic on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and surrounding areas.”
About the project/work tasks:
The project focuses on the upper Mesozoic interval of the Norwegian Continental Shelf (Barents Sea, Norwegian Sea and North Sea) with the aim to understand the evolution of the large-scale sedimentary systems within this area from a source-to-sink perspective. The candidate will integrate available subsurface data into holistic stratigraphic framework, investigate sediment supply variations, sediment transport directions, provenance changes, and major climatic and tectonic changes in this region. These observations will be verified using landscape evolution models and theoretical calculations of sediment supply. The aim is to increase the understanding of the Cretaceous period in the North Atlantic and the influence of climatic and tectonic changes on sediment supply in general.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within sedimentary geoscience or equivalent. PhD-students may apply if the PhD-thesis is submitted by the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- A broad clastic sedimentology background, including field work experience, is a requirement.
- Excellent skills in analysis of subsurface data types (2D and 3D seismic data, well data, log data) is a requirement.
- Experience with source-to-sink models is a requirement.
- A demonstrated ability to publish high-impact papers is a requirement.
- Strong numerical skills are an advantage.
- Programming experience is an advantage.
- Experience with landscape evolution models is an advantage.
- Experience with the Cretaceous on the Norwegian Continental shelf or surrounding basins is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
