Job description

A position as postdoctoral researcher is available at the Department of Physics, under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The position is for a period of two years with starting date 01.10.2023.

If an applicant has applied for and been granted funding for a research stay abroad while being employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, the employment will be prolonged with the equivalent time as the research stay, but for no longer than twelve months (thus extending the employment to a maximum of three years).

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

More about the position

One of the current main research directions in the Section for Theoretical Physics at the Department of Physics is on the computational aspects of high-energy physics. We are heavily involved in the development of state-of-the-art tools such as DarkSUSY and GAMBIT (gambitbsm.github.io ). This research is driven by the fact that searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), in realistic scenarios with many parameters, is today heavily limited by the speed of precision theory calculations. The investigation of BSM models is also significantly hampered by the computational expense of evaluating likelihood functions that require substantial Monte Carlo simulations, such as likelihoods for collider experiments.

The successful applicant will join the interdisciplinary research project “Developing solvents for unclogging the calculational bottleneck in high-energy physics (PLUMBIN)”, recently financed by the Research Council of Norway (2022-2029). This project is a collaboration between members of the research group in Statistics and Data Science at the Department of Mathematics, and the Section for Theoretical Physics. It is aimed at tackling these computational challenges through the development of new tools, using advanced methods in computational physics and statistical learning.

The announced postdoctoral fellowship position will focus on developing high-speed and high-precision higher-order calculations in quantum field theory through the use of modern computational techniques.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to become an active member of the GAMBIT Community, and contribute to the development of the GAMBIT software.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition is to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required qualifications:

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in high-energy physics. Alternatively, strong candidates with a doctoral degree in computational physics or statistical learning, and a demonstrated keen interest in working on the computational aspects of high-energy physics will be considered. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and defense are eligible for appointment.
• Documented experience with one or more of the following three:
  • Computational techniques in physics, including numerical simulations, preferably on high-performance-computing (HPC) clusters.
  • Advanced quantum field theory calculations.
  • Statistical learning (machine learning).
• High-level oral and written English skills.

Desired qualifications:

• Significant experience with advanced quantum field theory calculations.
• Programming skills in Python and C++ at a developer level.
• Experience with high performance computing.
• Experience with machine learning.
• A strong research record, evaluated according to the DORA-declaration on research assessment.

Personal skills

Good social and collaboration skills, and the ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment.
