About the position

Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at Networks and Distributed Systems at the Department of Informatics (IFI) , University of Oslo.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Expected starting date is January 1, 2023, and the research fellowship period is for three years.

Job description

This position is part of the Horizon Europe IMAGINE-B5G project that aims to create an advanced and accessible end-to-end (E2E) 5G platform for Large-Scale Trials and Pilots, providing a set of B5G applications, enabled by the integration of advanced disruptive 5G technologies. IMAGINE-B5G brings together four advanced 5G experimental facilities, located in Norway, Spain, Portugal and France. UiO’s Sustainable Immersive Networking Lab (SIN-LAB) will be part of the Norwegian facility, focusing specifically on haptic and telepresence communication.

In SIN-LAB, we explore remote interaction across the layers, ranging from networking paradigms to protocol support to human perception. In order to realize intuitive and realistic remote interactions, low latency and reliable communication is the key. New paradigms such as Network slicing (NS) and multi-access edge computing (MEC) in 5G and beyond networks, play key roles in achieving low latency and reliable communication. However, even providing the best possible latency and reliability may not be enough to ensure that interactive applications can satisfy users’ requirements. Therefore, along with advances in networking paradigms, we need to provide cognitive latency hiding mechanisms based on the human perceptual tolerances.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work in the intersection of networking, machine learning and robotics, and advance the state-of-the-art and push the boundaries of multimodal remote interaction with multisensory feedback to create more immersive experiences. The core research work of the postdoctoral fellow is the exploration of personalized action prediction that relies on machine learning to hide delays that can be expected from infrastructures that rely on 5G and beyond networks. SIN-LAB provides expansive opportunities for experimental studies as it is equipped with a wide range of multimedia (cameras, LIDARs, headsets, glasses VR) and haptic devices (haptic gloves, robot arms and hands, in-air touch feedback and haptic body suit) along with networking equipment to support immersive networking applications.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia.
To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
