Job Summary

Dr. Ying Wang (Department of Pathology and Medicine) and Dr. Gordon Francis (Department of Medicine) at UBC, are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work on a collaborative research project at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation, St. Paul’s Hospital. The project will be multidisciplinary combining vascular biology, spatial biology and bioinformatic methods to study atherosclerotic disease using biobanked human specimens, cultured cells, and animal models. For details, please see https://wanglab.med.ubc.ca/research/  and https://www.hli.ubc.ca/researchers/gordon-francis/

Drs. Wang and Francis are committed to training postdoctoral research fellows who have a career goal to be independent researchers in academia or industry. The selected trainee will be supported by the New Frontiers in Research Fund (PI: Dr. Ying Wang) and two CIHR project grants (PI: Dr. Ying Wang & Dr. Gordon Francis). The applicant is highly encouraged to apply for fellowship funding.

The research labs are located at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI), UBC’s Senate-approved translational research centre for heart, lung, and blood vessel research. It is ideally situated within St. Paul’s Hospital (downtown Vancouver), a tertiary care hospital, which has been the catalyst for the creation of world-class tissue biobanks to support heart and lung research. The HLI is known for its capacity and mission to “train the world”, and has recruited top highly-qualified personnel from over 39 countries and 6 continents. The postdoctoral fellow in this position will be supported by career development programs at both the HLI and the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Medicine.

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC is a hybrid, academically intensive Department within the UBC Faculty of Medicine whose activities span a broad spectrum of teaching, research, and academic service, often performed in the milieu of clinical practice, and are ultimately devoted to improving the care, treatment, and well-being of patients.  The Department offers academic degrees at the bachelor’s (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc)) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels with the graduate program, one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, which has been recognized by UBC for its quality. The Department plays a major role in the MD undergraduate program and offers an accredited residency-training program. Faculty members participate across a spectrum of research from basic investigative to translational to clinical applied research and are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their excellence.

Work Performed

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Design, organize and implement highly specialized experiments and in some cases develop new experiment protocols and adapt new procedures
  • Keep a detailed notebook and present findings at lab meetings and conferences
  • Participate in training and mentoring junior trainees when needed
  • Develop an individual development plan with the supervisors and practice grant and manuscript writing under the guidance of the supervisors
  • Coordinate research efforts with members in the lab and collaborators for increased efficiency
  • Assist with routine operation and management of the lab: safety, ordering, instrument maintenance, supply inventory, etc.

Supervision Received

Reports to Dr. Ying Wang and Dr. Gordon Francis. Must be highly self-directed, taking initiative and working independently under the general direction of the PIs and as part of a project team environment.

Supervision Exercised

Assigns work to research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students, and research interns as necessary.

Consequences of Error

  • Applicants need to be proficient at cell culture (cell lines and primary cells), Western Blot, qPCR, immunostaining, and microscopy imaging.
  • Previous experience in histology, flow cytometry, and animal experiments are assets

This position is an opportunity for basic scientists to build on their experience in translational research by combining their prior skills in molecular biology with biobank research at the Bruce McManus Cardiovascular Biobank (https://www.hli.ubc.ca/our-services/cardiovascular-tissue-registry/ ) that Dr. Wang is leading, and to work with a leader in translational research on atherosclerosis and clinical lipidology (Dr. Francis).

Please include your Cover Letter, CV and academic record with your application.
