THE ROLE
· Salary Package: Academic Level C
· Appointment Type: Full time Fixed term 3 years – starting January 23
· Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)
The Role
This project will investigate the neural activity associated with the formation and persistence of auditory objects, and determine how the properties of acoustic backgrounds influences object perception and processing. It will seek to understand how hearing impairment impacts processing of both foreground and background sounds, and develop methodologies, analyses, and tools for using functional near-infra red spectroscopy (fNIRS) to study the listening brain.
About You
You will have completed a PhD in neuroscience, hearing, speech, and cognitive science or a related discipline. You will be an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You will have a high level of written skills as demonstrated through contributions to peer-reviewed publications. Excellent time management skills are a prerequisite.
About Us
Macquarie University (MU) Hearing, located within the Australian Hearing Hub, is a global hub of hearing and hearing-related research, education, and engagement, and through the Macquarie University Hearing Strategy 2030 is seeking to transform hearing health. We adopt a university-wide approach and work with partners to create opportunities for all community members to contribute towards advancing the hearing agenda and to reduce the global burden of hearing loss.
Led by Distinguished Professor David McAlpine, the Listening Brain program at MU Hearing aims to develop a deep understanding of how humans interact with their world through sound and the sense of hearing. It explores the neural basis of listening from moment-to-moment to across the life course to generate new knowledge and to apply this knowledge to advance new approaches to the design and implementation of listening technologies for listening devices. It does so by bringing a wide range of techniques and approaches—from in vivo experimental data to brain-imaging and modelling—on understanding the listening brain.
The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences (FMHHS) is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking and challenging what’s possible to solve some of the big issues of our time, both nationally and on a global scale.
We foster a values-based culture of innovation and creativity to achieve excellence in teaching and to enhance the research performance of the University. We invest in developing the careers and wellbeing of our students and staff and expect all our leaders to live our values of Caring, Integrity, Teamwork, Ambition, Innovation, and Engagement.
Macquarie is a university engaged with the real and often complex problems and opportunities that define our lives.
