Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a full-time (100 %) position as postdoctoral research fellow is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project ”TRUST-AI4D:TRUSTworthy AI models to predict progression to complications in patients with Diabetes”, financed by Trond Mohn Research Foundation. The project is a collaboration with the department of mathematics and bioinformatics at UiB.

About the project/work tasks:

• Diabetes is a substantial health burden. The disease can develop and progress in different ways in different patients, challenging both our understanding of an individual underlying pathophysiology and our clinical planning of therapies.
• Recent developments in computational biology, machine learning, and artificial intelligence make it possible to learn about these diverse pathways of disease progression from multi-omics data. This goal will help us understand, and potentially treat, diabetes progression accounting for individual variability: aligning with the philosophy of data-driven precision medicine. However, for responsible and robust applications, the process of learning and classifying diabetes progression behaviour must be transparent: an AI “black box” which suggests decisions without clear reasoning is not sufficient.
• This project will involve developing and applying approaches for the inference of disease progression in large state spaces, with large-scale biological data, in order to transparently learn how diabetes progresses within and between patients. There is a particular focus on “hypercubic inference” for accumulation processes – that is, learning the dynamics of processes evolving on a transition graph that takes a particular structure.

The project is interdisciplinary, with elements of computational biology, biostatistics, and machine learning. The position is within a diverse team, including several members in the Department of Mathematics working on these hypercubic inference approaches, and several members in clinical research dealing with the clinical data. Training will be provided on these methods, and the applicant should have experience with statistical/mathematical modelling and computational biology.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within statistics, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, informatics or related quantitative discipline, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded

• Experience with statistical modelling, and with R is required
• Experience working with large-scale “omics” biological data, working with accumulation models, and working in C/C++ and Python is an advantage
• Experience in counseling, teaching, grant applications writing is an advantage
• Experience in diabetes research is an advantage
• Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
• Applicants must have excellent skills in both written and oral English
• Personal and relationsal qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is three years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
