Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Environmental GIS

University of Oxford

We are seeking an environmental scientist with expertise in GIS and Python to work in applied research at the frontiers of evidence-led nature recovery. Working as part of a large interdisciplinary team that spans different departments and research programmes, the goal is to help develop a robust GIS mapping toolkit that can be used widely by stakeholders across the UK, to guide more effective deployment of nature recovery and nature-based solutions.

The successful applicant will lead further development of a set of Python modules for mapping habitats and natural capital in the UK. These modules use an innovative approach to combine multiple existing datasets with ‘messy boundaries’ while maintaining spatial integrity. The modules have been used to generate Natural Capital maps in various parts of England and Wales. The goal now is to revise the code to make the map generation more robust and streamlined and extend the code to add new functionality to aid with decision-making regarding suitable locations for different nature-based solutions.

You will have experience in use of ArcGIS and/or QGIS for spatial analysis using vector datasets and excellent Python and R coding skills, including use of the ArcPy library for working with ArcGIS vector datasets. You will have experience in geospatial modelling of environmental processes and impacts and in the analysis of remote sensing data for environmental applications. Experience in handling and storing large datasets is essential. A strong interest in applying knowledge-based tools to help guide the wider uptake of nature-based solutions to address societal challenges in the UK is a must
