Overview

About the Role

Applicants are invited to apply for a 3-year full-time Barts Charity funded post-doctoral position to join Dr Dunja Aksentijevic’s team investigating the therapeutic potential of modulating myocardial ATP homeostasis in type 2 diabetes. The position is at the Centre for Biochemical Pharmacology which brings together a group of leading clinical and non-clinical scientists researching the clinical, genetic, cellular and molecular basis of cardiovascular diseases. The Centre is based within the picturesque Charterhouse Square Campus in the heart of City of London and within the world-renowned William Harvey Research Institute at Barts and The London Medical School, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

The appointed person will undertake research investigations under the supervision of Dr Aksentijevic and provide research as well as administrative support in order to realise the objectives and development of the research programme. The particular emphasis of the project will be to examine the impact of changes in cardiac function and metabolism (substrate preference, ion handling and metabolic signalling) in diabetic cardiomyopathy. The position is part of the Barts Metabolism Network which brings together researchers across the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to investigate how dysregulated metabolism leads to obesity and the significant long-term health problems that this causes. As such the PDRA will interact with the Broader group to share and learn new skills.

About You

Applicants should hold a PhD degree or equivalent in biological or related science and have a strong background in metabolic techniques. Animal ex vivo and in vivo cardiovascular physiology techniques (such as Langedorff perfusions, echocardiography, in vivo monitoring) are essential, as is the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to demonstrate effective and efficient multi-tasking and maintain accurate and up to date records. In addition, the applicants should have high level of proficiency with computer software related to laboratory research, data presentation and statistical evaluation, as well as the ability to organise a varied workload between research, supervision and administration. Ability to communicate well, understand the research process and work within a team are also essential. The experimental work also involves genomic analysis, therefore specific expertise in the transcriptomic data analysis would be desirable.
