Position Overview Hiring a post-doctoral researcher (postdoc) will benefit the university by increasing research output and benefit the postdoctoral scholar by developing the skills and gain hands-on experiences in process research and development targeting at commercialization. This position is for a period of up to 24 months, contingent of the performance evaluation held annually.
This position will be working on the engineering research and development of a prototype hydrochar production system for phosphorus cycling from dairy manure, a joint research project funded by USDA NIFFA. The goal of this project is to design, fabricate, and evaluate a continuous-flow prototype system for producing hydrochar from dairy manure through hydrothermal carbonization. The position will be jointly held in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, College of Engineering in Moscow, ID and in the Twin Falls Research and Extension Center, College of Agricultural & Life Sciences in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Position Responsibilities

Key Accountability Advance scholarly activities in research, development and reach-out by:
Job Duties
  • Developing the prototype system by applying the optimized operating parameters and with a detailed process design and control mechanisms.

  • Identifying research goals, develop experimental protocols and determine variables.

  • Preparing hardware and procure materials necessary to conduct experiments.

  • Designing experiments using statistical software.

  • Characterizing materials using electron microscopy and other analytical techniques.

  • Conducting and coordinating the fabrication and integration of the prototype processor system.

  • Designing hardware including mechanical and electrical/electronic components.

  • Acquiring, manufacturing, and assembling components.

  • Writing codes with engineering software (e.g., MatLab) for system controls.

  • Testing and improving hardware, and debug software.

  • Testing the operability of the prototype system in laboratory and on-farm settings.

  • Conducting experiments by following safety procedures.

  • Collecting and processing data for system improvement and evaluation by using a variety of computational tools.

  • Documenting and disseminating research findings via scientific publications and agricultural extension systems.

  • Writing manuscripts with excellent quality using technical/scientific English language.

  • Managing manuscript submission.

  • Preparing and delivering oral presentations at scholarly conferences.

  • Sharing research findings in other modes as appropriate.

  • Communicating with principal investigators regularly to review research outcomes and plan project activities.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience
  • Experience in engineering research experience, especially in the field of thermochemical processing, hydrothermal liquefaction and/or carbonization.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in working on mechanical, electrical, electronic, and/or other systems.

  • Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication and experience disseminating research findings in peer-reviewed technical journals.
Required Education
  • Earned Ph.D. in Engineering or a closely related discipline
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
Additional Preferred
  • Two or more years working in a research lab

  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes

  • Knowledge and experience with operating machinery such as fork-lift

  • Experience in developing research proposals
Physical Requirements
  • The person should be able to occasionally life, carry or or otherwise move heavy materials up to 50 lbs.

  • The person should be able to drive light duty vehicles for extended distances.
Working Conditions
  • This position works in the environments of office, laboratory, machine shop and dairy farms.
