Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecology and Evolution

Apply now Job Number:492926
Department: Biology
Position Type:Faculty – Non-Tenure Track
Categories:Faculty – Biology

The Department of Biology at Carleton College invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in host-parasite interactions and avian behavioral ecology.  The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching and scholarship in a liberal arts environment and a completed (or substantially completed) Ph.D. in evolution, ecology, animal behavior, immunology, or a related field.  We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body.  We especially encourage applications from those with previous experience with field research, analysis of movement or spatial data, disease ecology, or immunology.  The position will begin on June 1, 2023.  The initial appointment will be 15 months, but the secured NSF-EEID grant that is funding this position is available to extend the appointment to a total of 4.5 years.  Extensions to the position will be arranged by mutual agreement.

The appointment will involve both teaching (1–2 courses per year) and research, including mentoring and supervising teams of undergraduate researchers in the field.  The teaching portfolio will include a research-experience course on disease ecology and evolution; introductory biology; and other courses based on the interest and expertise of the candidate and the needs of the department.  The postdoctoral fellow will join Dr. Amanda Hund’s research group at Carleton, as part of a collaborative research team that includes Dan Bolnick (U. Connecticut), Jessica Hite (UW-Madison), Sebastian Schreiber (UC-Davis), and the Biodiversity Research Institute. The project is studying how ecology, behavior, and immunology within threespine stickleback, common loons, and copepods shape transmission dynamics of the tapeworm S. solidus.  The postdoctoral fellow will help coordinate research across the collaboration and will help lead both field and lab research.  This position involves annual fieldwork on Vancouver Island, Canada, and work at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.  There will also be opportunities to pursue smaller related projects according to the postdoc’s own interests, and to work with the different lab groups in the collaboration.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, it is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.

Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities.  We are committed to developing our faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please visit careers.carleton.edu and submit an online application, including (1) a cover letter outlining interest in the position and describing how you will contribute to campus efforts towards diversity, equity, and inclusion; (2) CV; (3) a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy (1–2 pages); and (4) a statement of research interests, experiences, and goals as pertinent to this position (1–2 pages). In addition, please submit contact information for three references (whom we will contact to solicit letters after an initial round of reviewing applications). Applications received by November 21, 2022 will be guaranteed full consideration; review of applications will continue until the position is filled. For further inquiries, please contact Dr. Amanda Hund (ahund@carleton.edu).
