About the position

The Department of Political Science is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow (SKO 1352). The successful applicant will work jointly for the research projects “When will citizens defend democracy? (DefDem) and «Moral Beliefs about Violent Political Conflict (MoViCon), where both projects are funded by the Research Council of Norway. The appointment is for a fixed period of 4 years, with a 25% teaching requirement.

DefDem is headed by Associate Professor Sirianne Dahlum, and investigates citizens’ evaluation of and reactions to democratic erosion and elite violations of democratic norms. The project develops research designs to assess and explain citizens’ commitments to democracy in eroding and currently stable democracies, drawing on a combination of survey/lab experiments and event data on mass protest and democratic erosion.

MoViCon is headed by Professor Tore Wig. It investigates how and why citizens form moral beliefs about different forms of political violence (ranging from civil war, to violent protests and interstate war), using a combination of original survey-experiments and analyses of existing survey data.
The main purpose of the fellowship is for researchers to qualify for work in higher academic positions. To this end, the main focus of this position is to conduct research, including publication and dissemination. In addition, the fellow is expected to actively contribute to the broader research agenda and environment of the two projects, and to contribute to empirical studies carried out by the two project teams. As part of their teaching obligation, the appointed postdoctoral fellows are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency during their fellowship period.
