Postdoctoral Fellow, Mathematics
Tulane University: School of Science and Engineering: Mathematics
Location
New Orleans, Louisiana
Open Date
Sep 10, 2022
Description
One or two postdoctoral positions are available in the Mathematics Department of Tulane University to help create a new research group in integrability, and to take part in a multi-university, international research collaborative. The research team strives to discover nonlinear phenomena along with their complete and mathematically precise explanations. Recent results include the detailed asymptotic description of the actual oscillations of a soliton interacting with a gas of solitons (establishing for the first time the rigorous validity of a kinetic theory of solitons) and the first explanation of the soliton resolution conjecture. Other examples range all the way to the connection between combinatorics, random matrix theory, and 2-D quantum gravity.
Postdoctoral researchers working in this area will be mentored to support the development of their own independent research program, while collaborating with the research collective.
At Tulane, professional development includes the usual interactions with faculty researchers to discuss career decisions, along with the expectation that the postdoc participate in the mentoring of graduate students in conjunction with Ken McLaughlin, as well as teaching two courses per year.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have recently received a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field and will have experience with asymptotic analysis (required) and integrable systems (preferred). There is no requirement that the candidate must have a background in soliton theory or random matrix theory – just a willingness to learn and apply their expertise to this exciting area of mathematics and applications. The appointment is for one year, and, subject to successful performance, renewable for up to two more years.
The position could start as early as January 1, 2023, but later start dates are certainly possible.
Application Instructions
Applicants are requested to submit their current CV, research and teaching statements, and a personal statement regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, and have three references submitted through Interfolio. Review of applications will begin on October 16, 2022 and will extend until the position is filled. Questions may be addressed to Prof. Ken McLaughlin ([email protected] ).
Note: This research collaborative has a strong interest in ensuring that candidates hired for these postdoctoral appointments share a commitment to excellence, access, and basic principles of community. The personal statement regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, is consistent with these commitments, to ensure that our scholars have an awareness of these issues, and a willingness to engage to help in the advancement towards diversity and equity goals.
Application Process
