The Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterolotgy at the University of Alberta is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to assist in research on Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

This position has an appointment end date of April 1, 2025 with the possibility of extension, has a salary range of $40,000 -$55,000, and offers a benefits package found at Postdoctoral Fellows Benefits .

Location – This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person with on-site work primarily taking place at North Campus, Edmonton.

About the IBD Unit and the Division of Gastroenterology 

The inflammatory bowel disease unit of the Division of Gastroenterology consists of 6 gastroenterologists, and 4 IBD nurses, treating approximately 5,000 IBD patients. Our research projects are aimed at improving treatment and outcomes for our patients.

About the Postdoctoral Fellowship

The post-doctoral fellow will play a crucial role in coordinating investigator-initiated research for our IBD unit. The main task will be to engage with our IBD physicians and develop clinical research questions. Subsequently, the post-doctoral fellow will write grant proposals to convert ideas into concrete projects and obtain funding. 

Other responsibilities include: mentoring research associates, and PhD students within our group, and helping to initiate investigator-initiated research projects. We have the intention to extend the contract beyond one year if the collaboration is successful.

The core duty for this position is to convert clinical research ideas from our group into successful grant applications with funding agencies like CIHR and CCC.

Duties include:

  • Attending clinical meetings, exploring funding options, coordinating grant writing, and working with other research groups, clinicians, and funding agencies
  • Supervise research associates and students in our IBD group
  • Support ongoing and new IBD studies including patient recruitment, regulatory processes and patient visits

 Qualifications

  • PhD or MD degree, must have obtained  PhD within 5 years or 10 years after an MD
  • Experience in clinical research
  • Experience with grant writing
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proof of funded grant applications
  • Clinical knowledge is preferred
  • Knowledge of Clinical trials, training in Good Clinical Practices Guidelines (GCP) and International Council on Harmonization Guidelines (ICH) preferred
  • Experience with medical charts in Connect Care preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications; knowledge of electronic databases would be an asset
