Position 

GlycoNet is seeking a highly motivated and skilled post-doctoral fellow in organic chemistry to join the dynamic and client-focused carbohydrate synthesis team. Under the guidance of the GlycoNet Scientific Director, Dr. Warren Wakarchuk, and the Node Manager, Dr. Sicheng Lin, the incumbent will develop and execute contract research projects in the area of synthetic carbohydrate and organic chemistry. This role presents a unique opportunity to actively engage in innovative scientific endeavours, collaborate with renowned experts and industry partners, and make significant contributions to advance glycomics research and development.

Duties 

  • Carry out complex research activities under the direction of the Supervisors (i.e. Scientific Director and Manager)
  • Develop and execute research projects in the area of synthetic carbohydrate and organic chemistry
  • Research techniques include but are not limited to: carrying out organic reactions under inert conditions, purification of organic compounds by chromatrography, NMR spectroscopic and MS characterization of organic compounds
  • Use a variety of specialized (rotary evaporators, high-pressure reaction systems, low temperature reaction systems, spectrophotometers) and general (balances, pipettors, stir plates, hot plates, fume hoods, fridges, freezers, water baths, pH meters) lab equipment to perform research
  • Maintain detailed notes of experiments, organize and present research results as needed
  • Use computer software to aid in the analysis and presentation of data
  • Write clients reports

Qualifications

  • Requires a PhD in Organic Chemistry preferably with experience in modern chemical glycosylation methodologies and the purification of protected and deprotected carbohydrates and oligosaccharides using chromatographic methods.
  • Experience in chemoenzymatic synthesis will be considered as an asset
  • PhD degree completed in the last 2-3 years, at most
  • The candidate is expected to carry out multi-step synthesis of oligosaccharides range from multi-gram scale to milli-gram scale
  • Experience in structure elucidation of synthetic molecules using NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry is essential
  • Must be an energetic, out-of-box thinker with positive attitude
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as is the desire and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Maintaining a safe and collegial working environment following Standard Operating Procedures for safety including WHIMIS guidelines
