Postdoctoral Fellow in Multi-messenger astrophysics (4)

Ref. No. SU FV-3780-22

at The Oskar Klein Centre, Stockholm University. Closing date: 15 January 2023.

The successful candidates will be employed either at the Department of Astronomy or the Department of Physics at Stockholm University. Both departments are part of the Oskar Klein Centre (OKC) Stockholm, a rich scientific environment that comprises more than a hundred researchers working in both theory and experiment in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and particle physics at both Stockholm University and the Royal Institute for Technology.

Project description
The successful candidates will work in the cross-departmental “Gravity Meets Light” project (funded by the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation), which aims to study and connect various aspects of neutron star mergers and their resulting kilonova transients. This can include modelling of kilonova light curves and spectra (working mainly with A. Jerkstrand), design and participation in upcoming observational followup campaigns using ZTF, ENGRAVE, and JWST (J. Sollerman, A. Goobar), development of rapid response strategies by using data emulation techniques (H. Peiris), and/or the study of cosmological and fundamental physics applications of neutron star mergers (A. Goobar, H. Peiris). The successful applicant will have a strong interest in the connection points between their specific area of expertise and related topics in the broader field.

The OKC hosts a vibrant research program on dark matter, dark energy, transient and multimessenger astrophysics, galaxy evolution, structure formation, and related particle physics questions. Postdoctoral associates are also welcome to participate in Scientific  Programs at Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods.

Stockholm University is affiliated to Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN) that supports expat partners with professional events, career-related advice and by building a social network in their new hometown.

Main responsibilities
The successful applicants will carry out research, both independently and collaboratively, within the context of the Gravity Meets Light project. They will present results in refereed scientific publications and at international conferences. They will participate in departmental and cross-departmental activities and meetings, and contribute to supervision of Bachelor/Master’s/PhD students. Opportunities for teaching or other institutional activities exist.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in one or more of: astronomical and cosmological data analysis, statistics, programming, radiative transfer and spectral analysis, numerical or machine-learning modeling, and theoretical physics.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2023-09-01 or as per agreement.
