Blekinge Institute of Technology

We are one of Sweden’s most distinctly profiled institutes of technology, with a focus on IT and innovation for a sustainable future. A key word at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) is closeness – close cooperation with industry and society, and closeness to our students and to our management.
Our closeness to the sea is also very apparent at both campuses, as well as being a comfortable bike ride away from the city and residential areas. BTH stands for quality and new approaches and strives to be recognised as an open, exciting and creative higher education institution.
We develop new knowledge through our research, which often takes place in collaboration with wider society and with a specific application in mind. The research contributes to a sustainable future, through directly through our research results as well as indirectly, through our PhD graduates and research-based undergraduate studies. To reach our goals, we need motivated and committed staff who are provided with the conditions to deliver research and education of the highest quality. Work environment and equal opportunities are consistently on the agenda and we strive for continuous improvements. Does this sound like your future?

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of six departments at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. The department is a vital part of BTH and has been so ever since its start in 1989. Our work is focused on activities that build competence for a modern digital product development that support companies’ transitions towards a sustainable society. In research and education, we work in a broad spectrum. From basic mechanical engineering via modelling and simulation towards innovative product-service system development.

Work description

This postdoctoral position is linked to ongoing research projects at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the topic of virtual prototyping within engineering design. The research focuses on the realization of environments through which new radical solution concepts can be explored to support early-stage decision making. The aim is to develop prototype digital twin demonstrators and methods for enabling co-creation and early decision making in transformative product service system design through the blending of tangible operational data, simulated data and experiential data (ie. operator-in-the-loop, usability, interaction). The research is carried out in close collaboration with industry at national and international level, with applications in the transport and manufacturing industries.

Work tasks mainly consist of research, data collection and analysis, writing scientific articles and grant applications and presenting the research at scientific conferences and in society. Teaching and supervision of students may occur but may amount to a maximum of 20% of the total working hours.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctor is a person who has completed a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. The person who has completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period should be considered in the first hand. Even those who have graduated earlier could be considered if there are particular grounds. Particular grounds refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, positions of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances.

Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria are described in detail in the “Guidelines for the employment of teachers and the appointment of associate professors at Blekinge Institute of Technology,” available at https://www.bth.se/eng/about-bth/vacancies-at-bth/#section-instructions-to-applicants .

Meriting competencies and experience

In addition to the requirements described in the work description, eligibility requirements and assessment criteria for the position, the following degrees, competencies and experiences are considered a merit:

  • A PhD degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Documented experience in industry-related research and collaboration with business and industry.
  • Documented experience in Product Service System and tangible prototyping in this field.
  • Documented experience of project work related to the blending of physical and virtual prototypes (e.g. environments like CAD, Blender, Unreal) for the creation of immersive environments to rapidly explore concepts.
  • Experience with the development and facilitation of product service system focused rapid prototyping methods from low to high fidelity for students and industry.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.
