Position overview

Ranked as one of the world’s leading law schools, the ANU College of Law is Australia’s national law school. This Post-doctoral Fellowship is an exciting opportunity to work on the multi-year Australian Research Council Discovery Project ‘Reconceiving Engagement with International Law in a Populist Era’, led by Professor Jeremy Farrall, Professor Jolyon Ford and Associate Professor Imogen Saunders (‘Chief Investigators’). The successful candidate will work exclusively on this project during their fellowship, in doing so developing their own academic career. The ANU College of Law provides a supportive and dynamic research environment with particular strengths in international law.

The Project seeks to map and analyse the impact of domestic populist politics on states’ engagement with international law in four key multilateral institutions (UN Human Rights Council, UN Security Council, World Health Organization and World Trade Organization) over the period 2014-2025. The project focuses on four country case studies (India, Philippines, UK, US).  It combines analytical international law research with comparative empirical research using data gathered through fieldwork interviews and archival research.  The successful candidate will work closely and collaboratively with the Chief Investigators on both the analytical and empirical sides of the Project.  The candidate will have a recent doctoral degree and a strong academic grounding in international law, as well as relevant practical experience and/or research expertise relating to the Project’s wider subject-matter.

The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.  They will enjoy engaging with contemporary international law issues and have an interest in keeping abreast of relevant developments in international law and institutions. The position requires strong organisational skills and capability to assist in the planning and facilitation  of research workshops and fieldwork.  The successful candidate will also have the capacity to undertake independent international legal research and be able to bring their own insights and contributions to the Project.

The Post-doctoral Fellow will gain experience in working with an established research team with a strong history of collaborative research and high-quality co-authored publications and will have further opportunity to work with the Project’s US Partner Investigators based at the University of Maryland and Indiana University. They will gain research leadership experience through coordination of research assistants and contribution to Project outputs including policy papers, journal articles and/or books.
