Overview With its broad and multidisciplinary faculty expertise, the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) is an international resource that supports basic and clinical research in environmental health sciences and exposure assessment and fosters associated programs in environmental health education and public policy.
Established in 1986, EOHSI’s major objectives are to:
Advance understanding of the mechanisms by which environmental and occupational chemical exposures impact human health.
Identify and measure human environmental and occupational exposures to chemicals. Treat populations adversely affected by chemical exposures. Develop educational tools describing relative risks of chemical exposures. Contribute to public policies related to environmental and occupational chemical risks. Offer training programs for environmental health professionals.
The Institute serves as an unbiased source of expertise about environmental problems for communities, employers and governments in all areas of occupational and environmental health, toxicology and risk assessment. EOHSI members are active as advisors to international, national, state and local organizations on public health issues.

Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Division of Environmental and Population Health Biosciences within the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) and Rutgers School of Public Health (SPH). Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Postdoctoral Fellow will be part of an interdisciplinary team and have access to state of the art equipment in the NAMC and immense resources for energy, environmental, biomedical and toxicological research across Rutgers University. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on a number of transdisciplinary research projects on the impact of air pollutants (e.g. black & brown carbon, micro- and nanoplastics) on climate and public health, as well as on the synthesis of advanced nanomaterials for energy generation & storage, monitoring and control of water & food quality.
Among the key duties of this position are the following;
  • Contributes towards interdisciplinary research efforts in the NAMC Center.
  • Participates in research projects related to the impact of air pollutants on climate and public health.
  • Participates in collaborative grant preparation with other investigators at Rutgers and other collaborative academic Institutions.
  • Presents results at internal meetings at EOHSI and at national or international scientific meetings.
  • Trains students in the lab.
  • Performs research resulting in first-author, peer-reviewed publications.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • PhD or equivalent degree in chemical, environmental or mechanical engineering, material science, toxicology, environmental health, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience in synthesis and physicochemical characterization of nanomaterials by off-line techniques (e.g., BET, XRD, TEM, TGA, Raman, FTIR, DLS).
  • Previous experience with animal inhalation tox. studies and/or the fate of chemicals and particles in the GIT.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience with on-line characterization of aerosols (e.g. using SMPS or laser diagnostics).
  • Strong skills in cell culture techniques and basic toxicological cellular assays (e.g. MTT, LDH).
