Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Post Doctoral Fellow for the Department of Neurology at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Dr. Yoon-Seong Kim’s lab in The RWJMS Institute for Neurological Therapeutics is seeking highly motivated individuals who enjoy working in a team under the direction of the PI while concomitantly desiring to pursue their own ideas in a supportive environment. The lab and collaborating partners combine expertise in oxidative stress underlying the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will work on a project as a post-doctoral fellow in a laboratory dedicated to studying the molecular pathogenesis of Parkinson’s Disease, identifying therapeutic targets and testing new therapeutic agents. S/He will work as part of a highly integrated research team utilizing a variety of laboratory technologies and approaches. Specialized skills in molecular/cellular biology and animal model studies are needed for this position.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Perform molecular biologic experiments that involve cloning of specific cDNAs in various vectors including viral vectors, PCR, sequence analyses, transcription assays, Western blotting, DNA-protein interaction, and cell biologic studies.
  • Conduct basic laboratory experiments in in vitro systems to study proteins and their functions.
  • Carry out studies with cultured cells including transfections, and primary cultures.
  • Treat and assess mouse models of neurodegenerative disease using behavioral tests.
  • Analyze the brains of animals modified genetically or through viral vectors, or treated with neurotoxins using morphological and biochemical assays including immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, HPLC, and q-PCR.
  • Analyze data, organize data and present data at laboratory meetings and major scientific meetings.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publications.
  • Communicate with vendors of research reagents and core facility personnel.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A PhD and/or MD degree in Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, or a relevant science, with knowledge of neuroscience, expertise in investigations of genetically-modified mice.
  • The incumbent should have training and experience in molecular and cellular neurobiology including cloning, construct design and vector preparation.
  • Experience is also needed with mouse models of neurologic disease including behavioral studies, genotyping of genetically modified mice, immunohistochemistry on brain tissue, Western blotting and biochemical assays on brain tissue lysates.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Record of productivity with scholarly, peer-reviewed publications.
  • S/he should also be able to operate standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, culture hoods, incubators, PCR machines, shaking incubators and plate readers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Animal experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent needs to be physically capable of performing the above duties, including pipetting, measuring weights and volumes accurately, standing on feet, walking to other buildings on the campus and to the animal facility. Occasionally, certain heavy items in the laboratory may need to be lifted, such as small equipment, boxes and bottles. H/She should communicate his/her research plans and findings verbally and in writing in proper English to the team and to the scientific community in presentations and publications.
