The Institute for Geophysics at The University of Texas at Austin (UTIG) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to use sounding radar data to study geology, oceanography and the cryosphere.  UTIG is one of the three research units of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Scientists and students at UTIG conduct expeditionary research in Earth Science in all parts of the world and are also involved in planetary missions and climate modeling. These research projects produce large data sets and require computational analysis and visualization.

PURPOSE

The candidate will be part of the Polar and Planetary Geophysics group at UTIG, primarily working on problems related to radar sounding and assessment of the ice shells of ocean worlds in the outer solar system. The candidate will also work on analogs from the sounding of terrestrial ice sheets.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This individual will work on ice penetrating radar simulation approaches focusing on HF, VHF and UHF frequencies, in particular working on problems related to radar clutter.

  • This individual will work on vetting algorithms for processing radar data.

  • Present results to the scientific community and broader public.

  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Geosciences, Planetary Science or a related field at the time of appointment. Ph.D. must have been received within the last three years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with planetary or terrestrial HF, VHF or UHF radar data; experience working with planetary data products

SALARY RANGE

$72,000
