This Early Mid Career Researcher (EMCR) position provides opportunities for scientists who are in the process or have already completed their doctorate within the last three years and is aimed at developing careers through:

  • Developing and implementing the next cutting-edge technology for regulation of translation
  • Work as part of a team spanning multiple biological scales aiming to interrogate how molecular processes within single cells influences whole plant acclimation
  • Building leadership skills through objective driven research with direct supervision of technical staff
  • Stimulate pioneering thinking as part of ANU’s innovative and supportive research environment with world-leading expertise

Position overview

This position aims to conduct transformative research into the control of photosynthetic protein production. Photosynthesis is a key target for crop improvement that can address global food security. Improving photosynthesis requires precision control of photosynthetic proteins. So far, it was unknown how this is achieved at the level of protein production. Excitingly, our team discovered how cellular protein production changes in response to photosynthetic demand. The project strives to uncover how clusters of mRNAs are decayed or translated into new proteins based on mRNA features and associated RNA binding proteins (RBPs). This will work towards the goal of revealing unexplored ways allowing the manipulation of the accumulation of target proteins to improve photosynthesis under adverse environmental conditions.

The objective of this position is:

  • Interrogate discovered regulatory mRNA features for translation of photosynthetic and resilience proteins.
  • Determine which RBPs interact with regulatory mRNA features found in objective 1
  • Build and test synthetic gene circuits that incorporate key regulatory features to modulate the accumulation of specific photosynthetic proteins.
  • This position will be located at ANU, Canberra for 2.5 years.
