Postdoctoral Fellow

Job Summary:

The Spatial Biodynamics Lab (spatialbiodynamics.org ) led by Dr. Changyang Linghu at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the exciting journey to observe and decode transient signaling and computation, long-term changes, and multimodal dynamics in the living brain via technological breakthroughs. The Spatial Biodynamics Lab is at the intersection of the Medical School, Michigan Neuroscience Institute, Biosciences Initiative, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan and provides a unique and world’s top interdisciplinary research and training environment. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be primarily appointed in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology in the Medical School, which is one of the world’s most distinguished and largest academic health systems and offers excellent professional development programs for transitions to career independence.

The successful applicant will develop and/or apply groundbreaking technologies to observe and decode transient signaling, long-term changes, or multimodal dynamics in cell populations in the living brain. The successful applicant will also work in a multidisciplinary and collaborative setting with scientists and engineers at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in the fields of molecular and cell biology, neuroscience, microscopy, genetics, development, microfluidics, and computational analysis and modeling.

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant should be interested in developing an interdisciplinary skillset, including molecular biology, optical imaging, protein engineering, immunohistochemistry, computational analysis, as well as in developing written and oral communication skills. Projects and research questions will be tailored depending on the candidate expertise and interests. Experimental responsibilities include designing and conducting research to observe transient and/or long-term signals and dynamics in live cells and in living brains and analyzing and interpreting the results. Non-experimental responsibilities include writing drafts of manuscripts and grants, presenting at national and international conferences, and networking with collaborators in the related fields in and outside U-M.

Required Qualifications:

The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in Engineering, Biology, Neuroscience, Physics, or other related field and a strong interest in technology development and application to understand and decode biological signals, dynamics, and computations.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in at least one of the following fields is preferred:

Protein design and engineering

Optical microscopy and imaging

Molecular biology and cell culture

Cellular and molecular neuroscience

Animal research, behavioral and systems neuroscience

Immunohistochemistry

Electrophysiology

Computational modeling and signal analysis

How to Apply:

To apply, please send the following documents to Dr. Changyang Linghu at linghu@umich.edu :

1)   Cover Letter, outlining current and future research interests and an expected start date for the position

2)   CV, with publication list

3)   Names and Contact Information for three (3) references
