A full time, multi-year postdoctoral scientist position is open immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Julie M. Moore in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the University of Florida. This position is supported by NIH R01 funding that aims to characterize the exogenous and endogenous sources of oxidative stress that drive cell damage and death in placental malaria. The position will support spatial transcriptomics work, along with immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, in endemic human placental tissue, as well as experiments in established mouse models for placental malaria pathogenesis. The bulk of the work assigned to the postdoctoral scientist will include in vitro work with primary term human placental explants, with experiments aiming to define sources of oxidative stress in trophoblasts (exogenous – monocytes and neutrophils; endogenous (disrupted mitochondria); parasite toxins – hemozoin (and heme)) and the cell death pathways that are galvanized by these stressors. Initial training in monocyte and neutrophil isolation from human blood and mouse blood and tissues, as well as in spatial transcriptomics, will be provided by collaborators at the University of Georgia. Other training and the bulk of experimental work will be done at UF in Gainesville, FL. |
