Postdoctoral Associate – 

An open Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Jordt and Achanta laboratories for a highly motivated individual with a strong interest to study the mechanisms of pulmonary injury following toxic chemical exposures. Funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the Jordt and Achanta laboratories seek to better understand the pulmonary cellular responses to chemical inhalation exposures, with the goal to develop countermeasures to prevent pulmonary dysfunction and improve repair. Transgenic mouse lines expressing markers of pulmonary cell populations will be used to monitor their fate and transformations, including epithelial, endothelial and stem cells. In collaboration with investigators in Duke Cell Biology, confocal thick slice microscopy will be used to visualize damaged structures and monitor cell fate and repair. Methods also include flow cytometry, bulk and single cell sequencing, proteomic approaches and respiratory physiological readouts. Extensive training in the above techniques will be provided. 

Governed by a mentorship compact, the Jordt and Achanta labs will provide training and mentorship in scientific writing, grantsmanship, communication and outreach, effective presentation at scientific meetings and career planning. Education/Experience: 

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D.., D.V.M.) in Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Physiology, Toxicology, Veterinary Sciences or related fields. 

Other Credential/Experiential Requirements: The incumbent must be a true post-doctoral fellow registered with the Post Doc Office and per the following requirements: 

· The term of this appointment is limited (5 years with a possible extension for an additional year) 

· The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, which may include teaching responsibilities. 

· The appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full time academic or research career. 

· The appointment is not part of a clinical research training program, unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is a primary purpose of the appointment. 

· The appointee works under the supervision of a scholar or a department at Duke University. 

· The appointee has the freedom, and is expected to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.
