Postdoctoral Associate

• The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity (AFHE) develops global leaders who have the knowledge, skills, and courage to build more equitable health systems, organizations, and communities. On an annual basis, the program selects 20 fellows from the U.S. and the world for blended in-person and online learning, coaching, mentoring, and team-based learning.
• The Beyond Flexner Alliance (BFA) is a national movement, focused on health equity and training health professionals as agents of more equitable health care. BFA activities include a national conference, an online community, and increasing activities to connect and support social mission focused health profession educators and organizations.
• The Residency Fellowship for Health Policy (RFHP) is a short-term health policy fellowship (3 weeks) during graduate medical education. The goal of the RFHP is to provide residents with an understanding of U.S. health policy and its implications for medical practice and health care in the US.
• The Health Workforce Research Centers support eight (8) health workforce research project each year under two focus areas: 1) equity in health workforce education and training, and 2) emerging health workforce issues.

Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.
The development of a professional network within the health equity community and at least one peer-reviewed publication are the anticipated outcomes associated with successful participation in this opportunity. Research endeavors will receive dedicated mentorship.
Responsibilities Include:

• Plan and conduct independent research on health workforce programs and policies, using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect, analyze, interpret and report data activities
• Conduct literature reviews and environmental scans of pre-health training programs
• Author at least one peer reviewed publication
• Design and conduct program evaluation activities
• Develop community networks through the AFHE and BFA, health equity training organizations/institutions and funders, including attending in-person meetings.
• Coordinate resources of the Mullan Institute and the GW undergraduate community to support pre-health professions students at GW and the local community
• Coordinate AFHE training program activities – supporting monitoring and evaluation
• Coordinate BFA activities, such as conference program development, communications activities (e.g. writing for the blog or newsletter), or supporting developing resources to advance social mission in health professions education
• Contribute to health workforce research teams – conducting literature reviews, data analysis (quantitative and qualitative), and drafting briefs and manuscripts, as appropriate

A Postdoctoral Associate:

• holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
• develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
• receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and
• has a limited term of up to five years at GW.

In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Special Instructions to the Applicant:
Appointments are limited-term and are designed for those who have recently received a doctorate. Appointments are made to academic departments with the approval of the department head and may require senior officer approval. Appointments are usually for not less than one term and are normally not renewed beyond a total of five years. This appointment is not intended for long-term, indefinite, or career appointments.

• Applicants should be recent graduates of advanced level education programs at the start of the scholar year.
• For health professionals, this would be following the level of training required for independent practice. For non-health professionals, this would be at the post-doctoral level.
• Applicants should express a strong interest in health workforce and health equity.
