POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Mechanical Engineering (MechE), to join the Mechatronics Research Lab. The group aims to develop next-generation precision instruments for nanoscale 3D printing of technorganic materials for medical applications. Building upon years of research on scanning probe microscopes and collaboration with experts on self-assembly materials, a first-stage proof-of-concept prototype will be developed to demonstrate nanoscale 3D printing capability and optimize process parameters. A long-term effort will focus on upgrading the system to scale up size and throughput of the printed structure for practical applications. This is an interdisciplinary project merging multiple fields with emphasis on precision mechatronics and nanofabrication for this specific postdoc position. In addition, to conducting the experiments and research the postdoctoral associate may analyze data and results, prepare and write journal articles, present at academic conferences, and assist/mentor students with their research projects.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in mechanical/electrical engineering or related field that includes a strong background in hardware development and practical implementation experience, strong organizational and planning skills for executing research tasks in a coordinated manner, proficient writing and presentation skills for disseminating research results to both experts in the fields and generic public, and the ability to work as part of a diverse team with multiple research groups and to mentor junior researchers. Should have demonstrated competence in one or more areas in mechatronic system development (nano-positioners, PCB electronics, embedded system programming, system modeling, and control algorithm); hands-on experience in rapid prototyping techniques for machining/nanofabrication; use of characterization instruments; and ability to perform independent research at the interface of mechanical/electrical engineering, nanofabrication, and material science.
