Position description

In many sectors of society, the systems used have reached a level of refinement that limits the prospects for further improvement in the individual products. Therefore, more research attention is needed on systems-of-systems (SoS) that combine the capabilities of individual systems to reach benefits in the completion of complex missions. However, the available techniques and tools to support SoS engineering are limited. Therefore, Mälardalen University is collaborating with Saab Aeronautics and Volvo Construction Equipment in the project “Mission and Capability Engineering for SoS” (MACE4SoS). The project is exploring modeling techniques to describe missions and capabilities, and tools for design space exploration (DSE). The techniques and tools will be demonstrated in case studies provided by the industrial partners. 

Within the project, we are now looking for a postdoc researcher to focus on model driven DSE for SoS. This involves several aspects, such as identifying the necessary constituent systems of the SoS; the capabilities the constituents should offer and the conditions for doing so; deciding how constellations should be formed within the SoS for a particular mission; and dealing with SoS evolution. 

The postdoc is expected to work both independently and with the other researchers and industrial partners involved in the project. Tasks include the formulation of specific research questions within the project scope; select appropriate research methods to address these; design and prototype software tools for DSE; experimentally validate the prototypes on industrial case studies; and publish results.

The position is a temporary employment of 2 years.

Qualifications requirements

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or similar. 

The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.

For this position, we require that the postdoc has sufficient knowledge and experience of software development to construct prototypes of DSE tools of sufficient quality to be evaluated on non-trivial cases. We also require a solid knowledge of English, both written and oral.
