Offer Description

The postdoc will collect agronomic data on a network of plots in the Gaillac vineyards (Tarn, 81) during the harvest period (between mid-August and September 2024). More specifically, data will be collected (number of bunches, number of buds, mass of bunches) on 500 vines and interviews will be conducted with farmers (to collect phytosanitary data, fertilization, soil management information). The experiment was already set up during previous work. The person will then carry out the statistical analysis of two sets of data: an existing database at large spatial scale and the one comprising in situ yield measurements. Analyses will involve the use of statistical models to determine the independent and combined effects of agricultural practices and climate on the inter-annual stability of vine yield. The person will lead the publication of the results in peer-reviewed journals.

We are looking to hire a postdoc for a period of nine months to work as part of the AgrobiodiverSity for a food-Secure planET (ASSET) project that is funded by the French program Make Our Planet Great Again. The main goal of this project is to evaluate the role(s) of agrobiodiversity to increase or support the resilience of agricultural production in the face of increasing year-to-year weather variability. In fact, technological solutions (including greater use of fertilizers and modern crop varieties) have not shown clear success in reducing the sensitivity of crops to climate extremes. Multiple research shows the potential of agrobiodiversity to promote resilience and sustainability in agriculture. We will focus this work on viticulture sector. It is indeed a sector particularly impacted by the components of climate change, with numerous effects observed on both vines (advanced phenology, grape ripening under warmer conditions, yield loss) and wine quality (changes in aromatic profiles and sugar-acidity balance). In this context, the main goal of the person recruited will be to estimate the stabilizing effect of grape variety diversity on yield at different spatial scales, from the farm to the wine-growing region.

The successful applicants will work with Delphine Renard (CNRS and PI of the ASSET project) at the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (CEFE) in Montpellier, France. The CEFE is currently the largest French research center in Ecology and Evolutionary Ecology. For more information:

Eligibility criteria

Candidate will have a Doctoral degree with specialization in ecology, agronomy, geography, biostatistics or related disciplines. Skills needed for the postdoc are:
• Ability to conduct field work requiring weighting grapes
• Excellent communication skills with the civil society
• Excellent skills in statistical modelling
• Excellent skills with R and management of large volumes of data
• Rigor and organizational capacity will be critical
• The ability to work independently and in a team;
• Experience with GIS and geospatial analyses will be a plus.
• Good communication skills, especially in English.
• Good knowledge of the wine sector will be an asset
• A vehicule will be needed to conduct fieldwork in the Tarn region
