Post Doctoral Research Associate – Grade 7

We would like to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on several projects hosted in the new Digital Media Society (DMS) Institute. You will work on several projects hosted in the Digital Media and Society (DMS) Institute: Nuffield and Welsh Government Funded: Developing a Minimum Digital Living Standard DSTL Funded: Understanding Data Use in Organisations Greater Manchester Combined Authority: Social Housing Digital Inclusion Pilots AHRC Modern Slavery PEC: Digital experience of survivors

The DMS has been established to investigate the role of digital media products and services in contemporary society and its impact on individuals, communities and organisations. The aim is to understand and address the role of digital media on society, including digital inequalities, digital divides, and variations in data and digital literacies arising from on people¿s in/ability to harness the potential of digital technologies. You will need good quantitative and qualitative research skills especially:

– Survey design and administration

– Running focus groups and semi-structured interviews

– Statistical analysis using appropriate tools (e.g. one of SPSS, R, SAS)

– Qualitative analysis using appropriate tools (e.g. one of Nvivo, Atlas/ti, QDA Miner)

Knowledge of an area of digital society research would be of significant benefit. For example, one of the following or related fields:

– Digital technology use in organisations

– Digital exclusion/inclusion

– Analysis of social and digital media use

–  Social Studies of Technology

Due to the funding arrangements you must pass a disclosure and barring security check. You must meet these security requirements before you can be appointed.  Also, citizens of or dual-nationals with the following countries are excluded from eligibility by the funder (DSTL):

– Belarus

– China (including Tibet, Hong Kong and Macau)

– Iran

– North Korea

– Russia

Any applicants who are still awaiting their PhD to be awarded should be aware that if successful, they will be appointed at grade 6, spine point 30.  Upon written confirmation that they have been successful in being awarded their PhD, they will be moved onto grade 7, spine point 37 from the date of their award.

This post is available on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2025.
