The research project Moving from networked to patchworked society: Motivational underpinnings and societal consequences (DigiPatch) is now searching for a post doctoral fellow who is expected to conduct research within the framework of one work package that will conduct a comparative panel survey in five countries: Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Spain and Sweden. The work package is headed by Professor Jesper Strömbäck at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication.

The research project Moving from networked to patchworked society: Motivational underpinnings and societal consequences (DigiPatch) is a three-year research project starting in late 2022. It is funded by Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe (Chanse) and the Swedish research council Forte. In brief, the purpose of this cross-disciplinary research project is to investigate the role of digitalization in social and cultural transformations, and how psychological needs, media use, cognitive needs and biases, and processes of social influence interact to shape people’s loyalties and identities, and the construal of parallel virtual and social realities lacking social cohesion. The research project includes scholars from psychology, political science, and media and communication.

Job assignments

A post doctoral fellow in the research project Moving from networked to patchworked society: Motivational underpinnings and societal consequences (DigiPatch) is expected to conduct original research that harmonize with the aims of the research project, and to work on designing and conducting the cross-national panel survey that is part of the project. The work will be done in close collaboration with professor Jesper Strömbäck, and other scholars that are part of the project. A post doctoral fellow at the University of Gothenburg can be assigned to teach up to twenty percent of the working time.

Eligibility

A post doctoral fellow position is open to candidates who have received a PhD in media and communication or a related field. Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who graduated earlier may also be given consideration, if there are special reasons.

Assessment

The applicant must have a PhD in media- and communication science or a related discipline. Accumulated experience in opinion research, media studies, and political psychology is required, as is knowledge about and experience of working with panel surveys. The same holds for a documented experience of statistical software packages such as SPSS, Stata and/or R. Experience of working in international and cross-disciplinary research projects is a merit. Another merit is experience of having responsibility for organizing data collection and applying for ethics approval. Excellent English skills, oral and in writing, is required since the working language within the program is English.

To be successful in this position you must have an eye for detail, be good at organizing and be a problem solver. You need to be able to work together with a large and diverse group of researchers and assistants. We expect that you have excellent communication and collaboration skills. We will make an overall assessment and the applicants considered to be best qualified to carry out and develop the duties described above will be appointed to the position.

Employment 

Fixed-term employment, two years, full time, start date January 1, 2023 or per agreement.
