Job Overview

The candidate will contribute to a research project funded by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to evaluate intakes of mixed oxide nuclear fuel waste materials related to nuclear fuels designed for new reactor designs. The specific task is to identify appropriate materials that when mixed in a formulation and cured to a solid exhibit the electron density and mass attenuation coefficient reported for lung, bone, muscle, and adipose tissue when exposed to low energy photons from 13 keV up to 185 keV.  The base material is polyurethane created by mixing proportions of Adiprene and LHT-240.  The candidate will consider formulations that add CaCO3, Teflon, LiCO3, microspheres to the polyurethane base to achieve the desired radiological properties of tissue substitute as published in ICRU Report 44.  The tissue substitutes will be used in anthropometric phantoms that simulate the human adult thorax. 

Required Experience

The candidate will:

  • Know about radiation interactions.
  • Have the skills to perform gamma and alpha spectrometry measurements.
  • Be able to evaluate linear and mass attenuation coefficients using radioactive sources that emit low energy photons.

Required Education

Ph.D in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering.
