This Scholarship was established by Port Waratah Coal Services to support undergraduate students at the University of Newcastle. This scholarship will be awarded to applicants in their first year of study. Successful applicants may be offered the opportunity to undertake (10) weeks of paid Summer Vacation work at Port Waratah in the period December to February. Port Waratah Coal Services will support eight scholarships per year that include continuing students.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in 1st year of any Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Hons) program University of Newcastle.
  • Be enrolled full-time.
  • Demonstrate educational disadvantage such as carer, sole parent, financial hardship, English language difficulty, long term medical condition/disability or effects of abuse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Out of Home Care, Refugee, or Geographic.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by attaining an ATAR of 75 or higher.
  • Be an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident (includes New Zealand Permanent Residents).
  • Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.
  • Not have previously received this scholarship.
  • Not have previously completed a degree.

Required Documentation

If documentation is not provided your application will not be processed. Please have all required documents available for upload as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files prior to completing the online application process.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • The application will include a free text question asking you to outline your interest in associated future opportunities with this donor and/or Industry partner.
  • You may be required to provide documents to support your educational disadvantage claims. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.
  • Up to 3 documents which demonstrate your academic achievement, such as awards and acknowledgements, participation in enrichment and travel programs or internships, academic competitions or challenges, your portfolio and/or cv.
  • Option to provide up to 3 documents which show your commitment to leadership within your community, such as a reference, proof of volunteering and community activities, leadership panel or club membership, articles or publication.

Benefit

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $21,000 over the full 3 year tenure provided ongoing eligibility for the term of the scholarship.

The scholarship will be paid as $7,000 annually, $3,500 each semester after the relevant census dates (usually in April and September).

Selection

Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.

Selection will be made by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment Selection Panel which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, College of Engineering and Built Environment and will include an external donor representative.

Interviews will be arranged for shortlisted applicants.
