Job Summary: The Police Communications Shift Leader provides oversight, guidance and training for the Police Communications Operators (PCO) on the shift as well as performs the duties of the PCO. PCO duties include but are not limited to receiving & processing requests for emergency and non-emergency assistance and dispatching appropriate personnel.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Internal Candidates only. High school diploma or equivalent. At least two years (post-training) of UAPD dispatch experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Prior to promotion, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation. Must be able to work shift work to include weekends and holidays. Must be able to work overtime as required to include coming in early or holding over as well as working game day weekends. Must be able to be contacted during off hours and report to work in the event of a significant event impacting campus.

Ability to remain calm under all circumstances, maintaining a professional tone at all times. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to teach and facilitate learning. Ability to vary teaching/training methods to a Police Communications Operators (PCO). Ability to assess job performance, provide constructive feedback and clear direction to a PCO. Ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict. Ability to provide high quality, accurate work. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and remain focused under stress. Ability to show initiative in completing work assignments. Ability to hear and understand sound sources coming through a communications headset. Ability to speak and write English clearly. Ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media. Ability to type accurately on a computer keyboard while conversing with callers. Working knowledge of department policies, procedures and directives and models exemplary PCO performance. Working knowledge of public safety communications equipment, practices, and procedures (departmental protocol and instructions, department specific software systems, the University of Alabama campus buildings and locations, appropriate law enforcement codes, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications: Three (3) years of emergency response dispatch experience. Some work leader/supervisory experience. Some training experience.
