PhD Studentship: Realisation of a Metrological Characteristics Approach to Calibration of X-ray Computed Tomography

University of Nottingham

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is now considered a viable tool for performing non-destructive-testing and dimensional measurements. XCT provides various advantages compared to other types of coordinate measuring machines (CMSs): particularly a high measurement point density and the only CMS capable of non-destructively determining both the external and internal geometries of an object, as well as distinguish between different materials. However, XCT measurements are limited by difficulties in uncertainty determination, most notably because of a relatively poor understanding of many of XCT’s plethora of measurement error sources.

In this project, a thorough understanding of a state-of-the-art XCT system will be developed and formalised. Starting from the ground up, the researcher will conduct a series of self-defined experiments, based on the metrological characteristics approach, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the system and understand its uncertainties. This will form the foundations of one of the world’s first fully characterised XCT systems, drawing in industrial partners for detailed, confident internal measurements of their parts.

This project is eligible for competitive funding for UK-Home Based applicants. The preferred start date for this project is 1st October 2022 but this is negotiable. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Samanta Piano [email protected] or Dr Adam Thompson [email protected] .
