A fully funded PhD studentship on ‘Introducing Order into Porous Liquids’ is available under the supervision of Dr Becky Greenaway in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London. The aim of the project is to build on our initial results on exploring and controlling the molecular assembly of the liquid state to form ordered porous liquids, and to streamline their discovery by extending our high-throughput workflow developed for the synthesis of porous organic cages and porous liquid screening. The project will allow the student to focus on organic and supramolecular synthesis to prepare interesting new compounds, with opportunities to receive training in the use of automated technologies and applying these in the project to target a wide range of possible compounds and for screening a range or properties. There is also scope to work with our existing collaborators to computationally predict structures and properties of new compounds, and to visit other collaborator’s labs to carry out in-depth characterisation of the materials and their properties. The specific objectives are open to being determined by the particular interests of the successful PhD candidate, within the remit of the broad project aim.
The position is available to candidates holding, or about to hold, a Masters degree in Chemistry, or in a related field if the applicability of the experience can be demonstrated. A background in one of the following is desirable, but not essential, as full training in the required techniques will be provided: supramolecular chemistry, functional materials, porous materials, liquid crystals and/or high-throughput techniques/automation.
Interested applicants are encourage to contact Dr Becky Greenaway (r.greenaway@imperial.ac.uk) by email, describing their interest in the project along with a CV. The position will be advertised until a suitable candidate is identified. Informal enquiries are also welcomed and encouraged, and applications from under-represented groups in STEM are particularly encouraged.
Funding Notes
The studentship, part-funded by The Royal Society, will cover tuition fees (home rate) and a stipend (including London allowance) for 4 years and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will start in October 2024.
