PhD Studentship (MIRANDA – Project 2)

Applications are invited for a motivated and self-driven PhD student with the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Research Group, hosted in the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI)’s Academic Unit of Neurology. The PhD research involves the evaluation of knowledge acquisition and sharing to inform digital solutions.

The Academic Unit of Neurology led by Professor Orla Hardiman is a multidisciplinary research-intensive team of more than 40 researchers working in several research strands, including: Health Services Research, Clinimetrics and Tele-medicine, Neuropsychology, Epidemiology, Computational Neuroimaging, Genetics, Drug Discovery, Neurophysiology and Neural signal Analysis. The Unit has a major research focus on MND/ALS, as well as other neurodegenerative diseases such as MS and has links and collaborations with Beaumont and St. James’s Hospitals in Dublin and other Irish and International research groups.

This position is one of five PhD studentships under the research programme entitled MIRANDA –

Multidisciplinary Innovation and Research Advancing Neurological care in a Digital Age

, a collaborative doctoral award funded by the Health Research Board in Ireland. Health and social care professionals with a range of experience, from early career to senior level and from various disciplinary backgrounds will be recruited.  The MIRANDA programme benefits from the experience of a team of co-investigators from a wide range of disciplines including clinical neurology, physiotherapy, health services research, e-Health and benefits from collaboration with the ADAPT centre (TCD), which is the world-leading SFI Research Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology (

).The aim is to equip a new generation of health and social care researchers and professionals to ensure research done in academic and clinical settings is translated into better care, which will improve the lives of people and their loved ones affected by ALS/MND and other neurodegenerations.

The PhD studentship is expected to start in March 2023.
