PhD Studentship: High Performance Battery Management System

Fees: Tuition fees will be paid by the University

Start date: January 2023

Project Description

Governments across the globe have set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and typically have major strategies to replace fossil fuel usage with renewable energy generation and the use of electrical power systems. The global car industry is transforming towards large scale production of electric vehicles. The High Voltage Energy Storage (HVES) research group at Oxford Brookes is helping to move automotive battery technology forwards for high performance, efficiency and durability. Within this context the HVES group is interested in creating an advanced research battery management system to support effective testing of battery packs that use data from an array of multiple sensors and enable advanced feedback methodology.

The aim of the research project is to design, build and test a novel advanced battery management system that utilises machine learning techniques to achieve high accuracy, reliability and efficiency compared to exiting methods. The project will require both electronic hardware and software to be created.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly competent candidate to submit their PhD thesis within 3 years. Candidates would be expected to have at least an upper second class degree (or equivalent) and/or Masters in engineering or computer science subject. They should be able to demonstrate strong STEM research capabilities (particularly the following experiences are of interest: electronics/electrical engineering; control engineering; microcontrollers; Simulink software usage; coding in at least one of C/C++, Python, MATLAB; and machine learning methods). The candidate should have good project management experience.

The selection criteria will focus on academic excellence, suitability of research experience/skills, and subject knowledge. A demonstrable interest and knowledge in automotive electric powertrains would also be useful.
