Frustrated magnetism

The project goal is to investigate the phase diagram of microscopic models of frustrated magnets of current interest and explore signatures of spin liquidity. In such magnets, the microscopic interactions fail to select a unique minimum energy configuration and can thus evade long range magnetic ordering down to very low temperatures, opening the door for more exotic, spin-liquid phases with long-range entanglement and fractionalized excitations. Understanding the phenomenology of pertinent materials and their proximity to spin liquidity is indispensable for their future exploitation in quantum technologies and computing applications.

The project will provide opportunities to endeavour into a vibrant field of condensed matter, acquire expertise in numerical methods (such as Monte Carlo and Exact Diagonalization), and work on experimentally driven problems of current interest.

Loughborough University is a top-ten rated university in England for research intensity (REF 2014) and an outstanding 66% of the work of Loughborough’s academic staff who were eligible to be submitted to the REF was judged as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, compared to a national average figure of 43%.
