Blekinge Institute of Technology

We are one of Sweden’s most distinctly profiled institutes of technology, with a focus on IT and innovation for a sustainable future. A key word at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) is closeness – close cooperation with industry and society, and closeness to our students and to our management.
Our closeness to the sea is also very apparent at both campuses, as well as being a comfortable bike ride away from the city and residential areas. BTH stands for quality and new approaches and strives to be recognised as an open, exciting and creative higher education institution.
We develop new knowledge through our research, which often takes place in collaboration with wider society and with a specific application in mind. The research contributes to a sustainable future, through directly through our research results as well as indirectly, through our PhD graduates and research-based undergraduate studies. To reach our goals, we need motivated and committed staff who are provided with the conditions to deliver research and education of the highest quality. Work environment and equal opportunities are consistently on the agenda and we strive for continuous improvements. Does this sound like your future?

TheDepartment of Computer Science (DIDA) is one of three departments at the Faculty of Computing. The department is BTH’s largest department at BTH with 70 people. At the department, research is conducted in two major areas: computer science and  engineering , as well as visual and interactive computer science . There are several different research projects in both areas.

Work description

The Ph.D. position is part of a new national research project “Human-Centered Intelligent Realities (HINTS)” which is being carried out together with six industrial partners and is externally funded by the KK Foundation. In co-production with our corporate partners and the community, we develop concepts, principles, methods, algorithms, and tools for human-centered intelligent realities, to lead the way for future immersive, user-aware, and smart interactive digital environments. The project is divided into five separate Research Themes (A-E) which collaborate within the framework of sub-projects. The doctoral position in this call will primarily be involved in Research Theme D.

Research themes in HINTS:

  • Research Theme A: Novel Experience Assessment Methodologies for Intelligent Realities
  • Research Theme B: Novel Environment and Interaction Techniques for Intelligent Realities
  • Research Theme C: Visual Analytics for Intelligent Realities
  • Research Theme D: Adaptive and Distributed AI for Intelligent Realities
  • Research Theme E: Networking for Intelligent Realities

The work at BTH will focus on research and development of collaborative and distributed edge AI techniques for intelligent (reality) systems. The goal is to bring system intelligence to the edge by designing distributed and composable decision-making models and resource-efficient edge-based AI solutions. Advanced techniques for building a collective intelligence in the network is another direction to study for achieving resource-aware network communication.

The main duties of Ph.D. students are to devote themselves to their research studies which include participating in research projects and third-cycle courses (no less than 80%). The work duties may also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%). The project involves regular business trips to meetings with our project partners and to international conferences.
