We are looking for a PhD student in Vehicular Systems.

Your work assignments
The Division of Vehicular Systems has a long experience in vehicle technology, modeling and simulation, and is now looking for a dedicated PhD student in this field. The position is shared between Linköping University, LiU, and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, VTI, as the research takes place in close collaboration. VTI is an independent and internationally prominent research institute in the transport sector.

The focus of the position is research in range estimation and charging planning of autonomous vehicles. Within an existing research project in Linköping, three autonomous buses are being driven which form a research platform to study how these vehicles can contribute to attractive and sustainable public transport. Experience from operation shows that weather has a major impact on the vehicles’ range and thus availability for the vehicles in operation, which is a central parameter when introducing these vehicles. In this PhD project, a model for predicting the vehicle’s range in different weather will be created, based on collected data from the vehicles. The model is then used to develop strategies for vehicle charging that are scheduled based on range, battery ageing, vehicle availability and grid impact.

As a doctoral student at LiU and VTI, you will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Division of Vehicular Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Your research training includes several elements such as completing PhD courses and conducting high-quality research under supervision from LiU and VTI. The work includes planning research projects, collecting and analyzing data and developing new models and methods. The work also includes publishing articles and presenting research and research results.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your workplace

You will work within the Division of Vehicular Systems that conducts research, postgraduate education and undergraduate education in propulsion, safety, autonomy, electrification, diagnosis and prognosis. Please read more at https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/isy/fs

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in Automotive Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Applied Physics/Computer Science or similar, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

You are interested in vehicle technology, automatic control, optimization, data analysis, model development and simulation, are analytical and open to new challenges.

You will have many contacts with internal and external partners, researchers, and collaboration with other PhD students. Therefore, we emphasise the importance to your ability to collaborate, communicate, take initiative and work independently. You shall have sufficient proficiency in oral and written English.
