We are looking for one or more PhD students in Information Coding.

Your work assignments
The Information Theory group within the Department of Electrical Engineering uses information and coding theoretic methods to develop reliable/secure/private/robust/low-complexity/low-latency communication, identification, and computation methods for future networks to approach the ultimate performance limits by using Shannon-theoretic way of thinking. Applications of these methods include physical layer security, private distributed learning, multi-function computations, biometric and hardware-intrinsic security, etc.

We invite strongly motivated students to apply for a PhD position to conduct research on Information Theoretic Security and/or Code Constructions for Security, including Physical Layer Security. Details of the research project will be decided based on the accepted candidate’s background. Close collaboration with Erik G. Larsson from the Communication Systems group as well as international collaborations will take place.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Applied Mathematics or equivalent or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Selection for postgraduate education takes place according to the assessed ability to assimilate the postgraduate education. When filling this position, the following competencies in particular will be taken into account:

  • Solid knowledge in the fundamentals of Information Theory is required.
  • Knowledge in Information Theoretic Security and Coding Theory is highly meritorious. Furthermore, programming skills for numeric computing environments and knowledge in Deep Neural Networks are meritorious.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and international environment as well as excellent communication in English, in verbal and writing, is required. Knowledge of Swedish is a merit.

We develop a study plan when the employment begins, so a declaration of intent does not need to be sent with the application.

Terms of employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date
By agreement, but in principle as soon as possible.
