We are looking for a junior scientist to obtain a PhD degree in a project funded by the IZKF (SEED/019/23) Münster as a cooperation between the Department of Cardiology I and the Institute of Hygiene.

The position will be based in the laboratories of the Institute of Hygiene. The research at the Institute of Hygiene focuses on the epidemiology, evolution and virulence of pathogenic bacteria.

The project aims to investigate the horizontal transmission and evolution of bacterial plasmids as a mechanism to promote the spread of antimicrobial resistance in hospitals. The candidate will be responsible for in vitro experiments to determine the influence of different environmental factors on the transmission and genetic evolution of antimicrobial resistance plasmids in gram negative bacteria. As part of the project the successful candidate will use long-read-sequencing technology as well as CRISPR-Cas9-based methods. Within a surveillance study the transmission and evolution of plasmids will be investigated in patients colonized with multi-drug resistant gram negative bacteria taking a bench to bedside approach.

Required qualifications:
• M.Sc. in Biology/Microbiology or similar
• A strong background in molecular biology
• Experience in working with microorganisms
• Experience in bioinformatics is an advantage
• Strong commitment to research and development
• Strong communication, organizational and problem solving skill
• Ability to work independently and in a team
