PhD Stipend in Climate Resilient Development of Small Coastal Cities and Communities (20-22083)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Planning and Development. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 November 2022 or soon hereafter.
The Department of Development and Planning conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions.

Job description

The PhD project is part of the department’s long term engagement in the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN), and continues our research and education efforts on Climate Change Adaptation in this respect.

The overall purpose of the PhD project is to increase understanding, accessibility, and relevance of climate science for specialists and non-specialists alike in order to enhance both the quantity and quality of stakeholder participation in climate resilient urban development.

The working title of the PhD project is Climate Resilient Development of Small Coastal Cities and Communities.

In particular, the PhD project aims to transform how climate change, coastal hazards, and planning data are used and communicated in order to empower stakeholders and ensure that sustainable, effective, and socially just coastal adaptation can take place.

This project hypothesises that the impacts of climate change at the coast, and the adaptation approaches designed to lessen these impacts, are more effectively communicated to stakeholders through geospecific and visual explanations than traditional forms of communication.

The project will work with two Danish and one international location and include collection of climate, adaptation, and visualisation data from the case study locations; development of possible climate and adaptation scenarios for the case study locations; and creation and modelling of visualisations in such a manner that they can support and enhance science-based stakeholder engagement and dialogue in the three case communities.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Martin Lehmann, +45 9940 8422, [email protected] concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
