The Opportunity

We are looking for two talented students with a strong interest in working with patients and clinicians to improve outcomes for people with heart disease.

Opportunities are available within two funded grants. The first (‘Equal Hearts’) involves working closely with patients and health workers to improve accessibility of hospital-based cardiac services. This PhD project will undertake focus groups to explore barriers to access for underserved populations (either culturally and linguistically diverse populations or people who live in rural Victoria), and then co-design and test an intervention that addresses these barriers. The second study (‘ENHEARTEN’) focuses on the role of health literacy in cardiac secondary prevention. This PhD project will also utilise co-design methodology to understand health literacy barriers to cardiac secondary prevention, and then co-design relevant solutions.

Both studies involve working closely with patients and clinicians and travel to participating health services within Victoria will be required. The PhD projects will utilise mixed-methods study designs and some experience of both qualitative and quantitative research is highly desirable. In addition, it is expected that applicants will have current knowledge of the Australian health system and experience of conducting research with patients and clinicians.

Applicants must show excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and the potential to conduct self-motivated research. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, either in-person or online. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.
