We are offering a fully-funded PhD scholarship to an enthusiastic and driven candidate passionate about improving access to women’s sexual and reproductive health. You will join a great team conducting the ORIENT study. ORIENT is a Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funded pragmatic, cluster randomised controlled trial which aims to assess the effectiveness of a nurse-led model of care (involving task-sharing, and where appropriate implant insertion by nurses and telehealth) in general practice for improving women’s uptake of long acting reversible contraception and access to medical abortion in rural and regional areas. Implementation of the nurse-led model in the trial is being supported with online education, educational outreach and participation in an online community of practice (AusCAPPs).

Your PhD will focus on understanding which components of the ORIENT intervention and implementation support worked and why. You will use a mixed methods approach which includes a qualitative and quantitative analysis of educational outreach sessions, interviews with participants and consumers, and a quantitative analysis of engagement on the community of practice.

The ORIENT trial is part of the SPHERE Centre of Research Excellence in Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health in Primary Care, led by Professor Danielle Mazza. This is the first dedicated Centre to lead research that is aimed at improving the quality, safety, and capacity of primary health care services to achieve better outcomes in women’s sexual and reproductive health. Students working within SPHERE will be supported by Professor Mazza’s research team, which consists of Post Docs, PhD students, academic registrars and honours students. They will also have the opportunity to be part of a large, multidisciplinary, collaborative team of investigators, which includes prominent national and international researchers and experts working in women’s health, general practice, pharmacy, nursing, epidemiology, knowledge translation, health economics, and policy development.

Eligibility requirements:

Candidates will need to fulfil the Monash University minimum requirements for admission to a PhD detailed here:

www.monash.edu/admissions/entry-requirements/minimum

It is expected that applicants will have a knowledge of and/or experience with the Australian primary health care system. Clinical experience in either primary care nursing, general practice, rural or allied health is desirable but not mandatory.

The project is based in Melbourne, Australia, and is available for immediate start.
