PhD Scholarship: Exploring leadership identity in Australasian emergency medicine

  • Exploring leadership identity in Australasian Emergency Medicine
  • Full time, fixed term (3-year) position at our Hawthorn campus
  • Annual stipend $27,596 (indexed) (2023 rate) for three years (with possible 6-month extension)

Emergency medicine is replete with complex leadership demands at the ED, hospital, and health system level. Given this context, it is crucial for Emergency Physicians to foster their leader identity and leadership capability as well as their clinical identity and capability.

This PhD project investigates how best to support and foster the development of Emergency Physicians’ leader identity and leadership capability. Consistent with the well-recognised need for a strong leadership pipeline in emergency medicine, this project will examine the leader identity and leadership capacity of early and mid-career FACEMs who aspire to formal leadership roles in emergency medicine. The study will contribute to the wider literature on leader identity and leadership development in medicine and health systems.

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • A Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or current enrolment in the FACEM Training Program.
  • Skills, experience and willingness to undertake practical research that meets industry needs
  • Demonstrated strong social and adaptive communication skills to interact with a range of people from community, industry and the university sector
  • Excellent project management and attention to detail
