About the position

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD research fellowship position in Embedded system (a Hardware-Software Co-Design for Edge intelligence) at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) in association with The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo (Norway).

The PhD research fellow will be part of the Horizon Europe project – MISO (Autonomous Multi-Format In-Situ Observation Platform for Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Methane Monitoring in Permafrost & Wetlands) led by NILU in collaboration with 7 companies and research institutions in six other European countries. 

The main objective of MISO is to develop and deploy an autonomous in-situ observation platform for use in hard-to-reach areas, for detecting and quantifying Greenhouse gasses (GHG-carbon dioxide and methane gasses). The platform will use a combination of stationary and mobile (drone) solutions requiring minimum on-site intervention when deployed. This aims ultimately to increase geographical coverage of areas with measurements and long time series availability of in situ GHG observations.

Starting date is expected at 1st of February 2023, but this can be flexible. 

Duties of the position

• Development of a hardware platform with edge processing capacity for data processing in gas monitoring applications
• Integration of  nondispersive infrared sensors (developed by company Senseair – partner of MISO) in a  hardware platform to have a complete device for GHG monitoring.
• Development of AI-based correction models to improve measurement accuracy of monitoring devices. The models should be optimized to run on the devices.
• Lab scale testing
• Supporting colleagues on testing the devices in the field
• Dissemination through scientific publications

In addition, the PhD student will take different compulsory courses in the PhD program at University of Oslo. 

Qualifications

The following requirements of the applicant are essential

• Master’s degree in relevant field such as Electrical Engineering, Instrumentations, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Cybernetics, Autonomous Systems, Physics, or similar.
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system.
• The PhD candidate must have fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The PhD candidate would preferably also have knowledge and skills within one or more of the following subjects: 

• Electronic design (PCB design).
• Embedded software for hardware (microcontrollers and/or FPGA)
• Programming (such as Python, C/C++, and/or similar)
• Machine Learning or Deep Learning algorithms
