Job description
A position as PhD Research Fellow in Solid-state electrochemistry related to proton ceramics for steam electrolysis is available at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) , Section for Electrochemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo (UiO).
No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
Starting date is earliest possible, and no later than April 1, 2023.
The fellowship period is normally for 3 years, with no compulsory work. If the successful candidate has a good knowledge of a Scandinavian language, the fellowship may be considered extended to a period of 4 years, with 25% compulsory work (teaching, supervision duties, and research at the Department).
More about the position
SMN is a cross disciplinary center, promoting research in materials science and nanotechnology. The Centre is an international player on basic science within functional materials and nanoscience, with application within energy, life science, environment, and ICT.
We seek a PhD research fellow with qualifications and interest for solid-state electrochemistry primarily related to production of hydrogen from steam in proton ceramic electrolyzers (PCEs).
The work is a part of the project “MODELYS” financed by its industry partners and the Research Council of Norway (RCN). The project is devoted to improvement of low-temperature PEM electrolyzers and high temperature PCEs by experimental parameterization and computational modelling. The project is coordinated by SINTEF, with University of Oslo (UiO) and NTNU as main university partners along with several national and international partners and collaborators.
The PhD at UiO announced here is focused on experimental studies of mechanisms and parameters for positrodes in PCEs. It is expected that the work will comprise fabrication and characterization of various model electrodes followed by impedance spectroscopy and voltammetry as a function of temperature and gas phase composition, as well as electron microscopy and surface analyses.
A main goal of the PhD work is to provide input to the modelling activities. It is imperative also to establish active interaction with that activity as well as the low-temperature activities in the overall project, the industry partners, and research fellows working on related studies in other projects at UiO and elsewhere.
The PhD is associated with the Section and Group for Electrochemistry at UiO, located with SMN in Oslo Science Park.
Qualification requirements
